The gauntlet that is CONMEBOL qualifying has eased a bit with the expanded, 48-team field for the 2026 World Cup; Six teams will qualify automatically and a seventh will reach the six team inter-confederation playoff tournament.
But it’s still chaos and Argentina has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup as the reigning World Cup champs are still flying and Lionel Messi has dipped in and out of qualifying games as his minutes are managed.

With Argentina already qualified, the table is tightening up beneath them for the other five automatic spots with three games to go as 15 of the 18 rounds of games are in the books.
Brazil recovered after a slow start but their heavy and humbling defeat at Argentina in March was a real wake-up call as Dorival Junior has been fired and replaced by Carlo Ancelotti. The injury-hit side have never really looked convincing during qualification but they’re still going to the World Cup. So are Ecuador despite suffering a three-point deduction.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay are dangerous and have joined Paraguay on the precipice of qualification. Colombia have stalled a bit, keeping Venezuela and even Bolivia in the race for the final automatic spots. Peru and Chile have slipped out of what was an epic scrap for a single playoff spot for the inter-confederation playoffs.
