Schmidt was pulled after tying a career high with 103 pitches, and the New York Yankees lost a no-hit bid against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday when Gary Sánchez singled to start the eighth against J.T. Brubaker.

JP Sears surrendered three runs in five innings Sunday in a loss to the Guardians.

Still one of his better showings of late. Sears struck out five and gave up only five hard-hit balls today. Unfortunately, four of those became hits, including a pair that followed a walk in the second, leading to a two-run inning. In his last eight starts, Sears is 1-5 with 35 earned runs allowed in 36 innings. If not for some injuries, he might have lost his spot already. As is, he’s set to face the Yankees next weekend.

Athletics selected the contract of RHP Jack Perkins from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Perkins earns his first shot in the majors after posting a strong 2.86 ERA with a 68/20 K/BB ratio across across 44 innings (nine starts) this season at the Triple-A level. The unheralded fifth-round pick from the 2022 MLB Draft figures to operate in long relief initially.

The 22-year-old top prospect boasts some of the most impressive over-the-fence pop in the game and is showing why he was the fourth-overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He projects as a middle-of-the-order force for years to come with the Athletics.

Mitch Spence was credited with a loss while giving up four runs over 4 2/3 innings against the Guardians on Saturday.

Spence gave up eight hits in the contest, and he walked one while striking out three. All four runs scored in the second inning, and the middling — at best — start saw Spence’s ERA rise to 3.84 in the process. It wasn’t a disastrous start for the 27-year-old, but a far cry from an effective one. He has a tough matchup on paper Friday against the Yankees in New York.

Butler singled home Tyler Soderstrom in the second inning to extend the A’s lead to 3-0. He’s now driven in 32 runs, and the three-hit night improves his slash to a very respectable .264/.325/.459.

Nick Kurtz swatted a two-run homer to help the Athletics on Friday to a 5-1 win over the Guardians.

This makes three straight games that Kurtz has homered, and he’s gone deep in five of his last six. This one came in the first inning off Tanner Bibee, and it upped his total to 10 roundtrippers along with 25 RBI since being promoted in the latter part of April. There are not too many young hitters who offer more power upside than Kurtz, and to say that he’s applying it early in his career is quite the understatement.
Jeffrey Springs

ATH Relief Pitcher #59

Jeffrey Springs surrendered just a run over 7 1/3 innings with six strikeouts to get a win over the Guardians on Friday.

The only run Springs allowed came on a solo homer by Angel Martinez. Outside of that, the 32-year-old was outstanding while allowing just two other hits and one walk. Springs has been up-and-down in his first year with the A’s, but this was a reminder of what he’s capable of when he has his best command. The Tigers are next for the southpaw, with that start scheduled for Thursday in Detroit.
Kade Morris

ATH Starting Pitcher

Kade Morris tossed a seven-inning shutout for Triple-A Las Vegas in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday.

He struck out six and walked none. Morris, a 2023 third-round pick, was making his fourth start since moving up from Double-A. Overall, he has a 3.44 ERA and a 63/18 K/BB in 73 1/3 innings. He’s not a big upside guy, but he’s someone who could see time in the Athletics’ rotation this season.
